UK Eclipse Group
Introducing the Group
The total Solar Eclipse of August 1999 offers an important opportunity for the the U.K.
scientific community. It is
seventy years since the last total solar eclipse was observed from these islands and -
after 1999 - the next total
solar eclipse will not be until 2090. Furthermore, this eclipse comes only four months
before the new millennium
at a time when solar activity is expected to be high.
It is likely, therefore, that there will be much interest in this eclipse not only among
the scientific community but
the public at large. With this in mind, the Solar Eclipse 1999 UK Co-ordinating Group
(formerly known as the
UK Consortium for Solar Eclipse 1999) was set up in January 1997 to provide information
and services for the
eclipse from the public understanding of science element through to education and
scientific experiments.
Sub-committees exist to deal with Press/Public Relations and World Wide Web issues.
