Wherever you are in Britain on August 11th you will see a solar eclipse. If you are in Cornwall, parts of Devon, the Isles of Scilly or Alderney you will see a total eclipse.

  • You will need a small mirror and an envelope

  • Tear a ragged hole about the size of a thumbnail in the front of the envelope

  • Put the mirror inside the envelope with the shiny side facing the hole

  • Put the mirror inside the envelope with the shiny side facing the hole

  • Hold the mirror towards the sun and reflect the image on to a facing wall, door or flat surface.
    This is your screen.

  • You will see an image of the sun reflected onto the screen.

  • Don't look at the mirror- look at the screen

Helpful Hints

The distance between the mirror and the screen should be about 5 metres - the bigger the gap, the bigger the image. Reflect the image back in the direction of the sun to cut down distortions. Try a white screen. If the screen is in shade the image will be better. Experiment before the day.
